I teach dance workouts at the Capitol Hill Y in Seattle!
Videos of some of my workout dances can be found on my YouTube channel Kathy Pullen Dance Fitness.
I have choreographed a series of dances that are meant to be followed, or to inspire you to dance for fun and exercise. Some of the more crazy ones I hope to develop into group pieces. The dances are similar in spirit to what you would find in say a Zumba class, in that they have phrases that repeat over and over in sync with the music, so you have a chance to pick them up. However, they differ in that the style is based on ballet and modern dance, so the combinations travel a bit more and the motions are more clean and precise.
Here is an example of a crazy one:
On the opposite extreme, here is an example of a warm up dance I would use at the beginning of a class:
The music I tend to use is different from the typical pop music you will hear in the gym. My favorite music for dancing is dark electro, EBM, or Industrial style dance music, preferably dark, hard-driving, and intense. . . I feel that pounding beat, and I just GOTTA dance! I often choose music from bands who are outside the mainstream.
For the most part, the dances do not require any experience in dance, although some of them do get a bit crazy, and so may appeal more to someone with a background in dance. They do not require a lot of space, so they can be done at home
This project was born out of the coronavirus lockdown. . . Stuck at home, it was frustrating to not be able to go to a dance studio or gym to dance. I am always listening to music, and spontaneously would start dancing all around my apartment, dodging my many plants. Over the year 2020 I started refining the dances, and taught them outside a few times to some friends and clients in the summer when the weather was still good. Everyone told me I should put them online, and I emphatically said no, I am not doing that. . . To me dance happens in a big room with other people, I will wait for gyms and dance studios to open to find a place to teach the dances. Ultimately, as the coronavirus crisis continued on, I decided I couldn’t wait any longer, and so I started videoing the dances so I could share them online.
