History of "The Labyrinth Oracle"

The project began when my brother Walter, who loves to think and write philosophically, decided there should be a divination deck similar to Tarot Cards but with a modern twist, and more cards to cover all of human experience. He used mazes and Labyrinths as metaphors for life and spirituality. He named his deck "The Labyrinth Oracle: Cards for the Spiritual Path". I thought it was a beautiful piece of work, his writing is insightful yet witty. Of course I am biased because he is my brother and we have always been close!

There was one big problem, however, the deck needed illustrations. My brother asked if I could do the illustrations. There was another problem, I liked to draw plants, animals, and fantasy creatures but not people, and this project would require drawing a LOT of people. Not to mention many other things I had no experience drawing. So of course I said yes, it would be a fun and interesting challenge!

To make a long story short, if I had known how difficult it was going to be, I probably would not have taken it on. On the other hand, I am glad I didn't know, and went ahead and did the work, because it was a transformational experience! Every card was a struggle, some more than others, because I never felt like I could do it justice. The project took over 10 years to complete, and when I got to the end I re-did many of the early cards. I learned to enjoy drawing people, and was pushed to draw things I had no idea how to draw. Every card seemed to be relevant to what was going on in my life at the time; I often felt I was "living" the card.

I hope that others will get insights and inspirations for their own lives from our work!  I would like to thank my brother for trusting me with this project. I am a different person as a result.
